Multiplexed and Relayed over an Armature

The other day a friend of mine went to a computer auction. For $1.25 he aquired a piece of equipment called a 32 channel armature relay multiplexer. At the time neither of us had the slightest clue what this device does. After much searching I still am at a loss. I can only say that I think it has to do with electrical signal test equipment. It's got a great name though.
